IT’S TIME TO STOP GOING IT ALONE.
What is a Mentor?

Mentoring is a powerful personal and career development tool that can enable the mentee to achieve or exceed their life’s goals and aspirations. A mentor according to Merriam-Webster is ‘a trusted counselor or guide’. Although the term mentor was derived from ancient Greece, neither its meaning nor purpose has changed or diminished through the millennia. The role of a mentor is multi-faceted, may be formal or informal, and may change or evolve as the needs of the mentee change. A mentor can be a role model, coach, sounding board, voice of reason, emotional support, counselor, and a trusted resource.

Do you have a Mentor?

Not just someone you follow on a social media network or you religiously watch their YouTube videos. Honestly, is there someone investing time and attention into your life? Someone who truthfully answers your questions and shares what he or she has learned from experience? Someone who cares about you, assures you that you’re not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges, and makes you feel like you and your journey matter.

While it’s safe to say that you could see marginal success alone, the greater rate of success comes with a relationship with a quality mentor. Even though these results are tried and true, it seems like so many people try to go it alone these days. They attempt to figure things out on their own, from how to solve problems to how to grow as a person. However, because of that, they spend a lot of time “reinventing the wheel” and learning from their own personal experiences – of both success and failure. “A lot of people have gone further than they thought they could because someone else thought they could.”

Here are 7 reasons why you should consider a mentor:

A Mentor Provides Inspiration. Many have the initial feeling to start a business, few act upon it, but even few continue. The thrilling feeling to begin is immediately combatted with following addendum: “I know I can be an entrepreneur, but cannot find the inspiration to get me into the garage, motivated to work 24/7.” It now becomes the responsibility of a mentor to make that investment to get the anxious, avoidant, tenuous, or timid, to take the leap and keep leaping.

A Mentor Provides Insight. There’s an old saying, “It’s not what you know it’s who you know,” but even more so ‘it’s what they know’. A mentor can give you the benefit of his or her perspective and experience. He or she can help you assimilate to a new position, give you an insider’s view on how to get things done, or even that objective force that saves you from making a huge mistake. A mentor’s insight could help you look at a stale situation and see a creative way to turn the tide.

A Mentor Helps You Define and Reach Long-Term Goals. A mentor can help you define your career path and ensure that you don’t lose focus and continue down that road even when you become distracted by day-to-day pressures. In a recent LinkedIn article, after being downsized three times by the age of 51, Karol Mercurio’s mentor encouraged her to leave corporate America and consider business ownership. She set out in a new direction and, with the support of her mentor, became a franchise consultant. She now feels like she has the most rewarding job of her career. A mentor helps mentees own their career plan and learn to balance the day-to-day with the big picture. Sometimes you can lose focus on where you are going when you are consumed with your current location, but a mentor keeps you pushing until you reach that goal.

A Mentor Keeps You Accountable. When you know you are meeting with your mentor, you ensure that all the tasks you discussed in your last meeting are completed. Lisa Quast, founder of Career Woman, Inc., says, “A mentor brings accountability and this breeds responsibility. I’ve found that within a very short period of time, my mentees fall into the habit of holding themselves accountable for completing their action items. They learn from me, as their mentor, and then the excitement of completing tasks and seeing the results motivates them even more to hold themselves accountable and strive for achievements they previously thought were impossible.”

A Mentor Can Double As A Champion And A Supporter. A mentor can be a great sounding board for all issues – whether you are having difficulty with your immediate supervisor, an ethical dilemma, or need advice on how to tackle a new project or ask for a raise. A mentor who knows you well can be a strong champion of your positive attributes and a supporter during any bumpy spots in your career.

A Mentor Can Help Open Doors. A mentor can open doors within your company, in other companies, onto a board, or even expand your network of contacts and business acquaintances. Patricia Palleschi, Ph.D, Founding Partner of The Executive Agency and former VP at Disney, says, “I have invited my mentees to join me on not-for-profit boards to give them experience in leadership in a volunteer environment. This also helps me instill philanthropic values. Values transfer is an important role for a mentor.”

A Mentor Challenges You To Always Present Your Best Work. With the help of a good mentor, you can work more efficiently with a clearer view of the future you are trying to achieve. This helps you feel more confident in your job, which leads to better job performance and more success along your chosen road. Oprah Winfery said in a past interview “A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself.” Mentors guide, motivate, inspire and support – enabling the mentee to achieve their life’s goals and aspirations.
